Filipino! Filipino!

July 2nd, 2008 . by Shara

Wow! So the Filipinos must have heard my praise the other day.

All I’m going to say is…well actually, I have nothing to say. I think the Black Eyed Peas said it best…

Pinoy ka - sigaw na - sige
Kung maganda ka - sigaw na - sige
Kung buhay mo’y mahalaga - sige
Salamat sa ‘yong suporta

What does that mean in English?

You’re Filipino, shout it out c’mmon!
If you’re beautiful, shout it out , c’mmon!
If your life is valuable , c’mmon!
Thank you for your support!

Seriously, folks. Thanks for coming out and getting involved in WikiAnswers. It’s awesome seeing such Filipino love going on. I was so proud, I showed my mom how the Tagalog category was growing and then we had a whole conversation reminiscing about Sarangola ni Pepe from my childhood.

So today, it is with a great sense of pride that we announce that Tagalog is the first non-English language on WikiAnswers to reach such a huge number of questions and answers to warrant its VERY OWN top level categorization! What does that MEAN in regular terms? Well it means that just like Business and Finance is its own category and Food and Cooking is ITS own category…now Tanong sa Tagalog is its own category too. And within the Tanong sa Tagalog category, you can find separate categories for things like Literature and Language or Health…but all the questions (and most of the answers) are in Tagalog!

So, thanks for your support, Filipinos! Here’s a little Black Eyed Peas love for you…

Tuloy! Tuloy!

June 17th, 2008 . by Shara

Tinikling in the hizzie!Kumusta ka? Ako si Shara.

Kumain ka na ba?

Confused? Yeah…that’s not English. That’s a shout out to all my Filipino peeps…out there in the land of WikiAnswers.

What up, Filipinos!? Thanks for stoppin’ by and keeping me company!

Did you know that there’s a whole WikiAnswers category for questions in Tagalog!? Yeah there is! Not only is it there…but it’s one of the fastest growing categories we’ve got. It makes me proud.

So proud. My boss came in the other day and asked how my Tagalog was…he was wondering if I wanted to help supervise and edit some of the questions that had come in recently. Unfortunately, I’m not much help; my Tagalog is pretty rusty…but I make a MEAN batch of adobo and I’ve been known to kick off my shoes for a good old fashioned tinikling every now and then.

I got curious and started checking out the questions about the Philippines…the questions that are in English so I can read them too. I found out some really interesting stuff I never knew about the place where 1/2 my roots lie.

Like what the stars on the flag represent and what the national bird is. Other things people are wondering about the Philippines:

I’m just so happy to see such great Filipino representation! So…Tuloy! Tuloy! (Come in! Come in!) We hope you’ll stay awhile!

Maraming salamat.

Oh! The places you’ll go…

GraduationCongratulations to all the graduates out there! That’s a pretty awesome achievement. What are your plans now? Have you mapped out the next 5 years of your life? Ten?

No? Why not!?

I kid. I kid. I will tell you that I’m incredibly jealous of you at this moment. You’re young and ambitious. You’re still optimistic and haven’t become jaded by the industry. You’ve got fresh ideas and your whole life ahead of you. Not that I’m THAT much older than you but seriously, 9 years makes a lot of difference.

I remember my graduation from UNC (GO HEELS!) like it was yesterday. Those Carolina blue robes and all that sunshine…

*sigh*

In honor of your big day, I wanted to highlight one of the best commencement speeches ever given. It’s not from MY graduation, but I’ve heard people talk about it and I feel like everyone needs some good advice from time to time. The quote is from Jerry Zucker…he talks about the art of making mistakes.

If you’re going to fail, fail big. If you don’t, you’re never going to make a difference. Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep. Ask yourself one question: If I didn’t have to do it perfectly, what would I try? For many of you, the biggest obstacle to getting there will be a fear that you have carried with your since childhood — the fear of humiliation, of embarrassment, of ridicule. That is SO stupid!

So that’s it, guys. Get out there and fail a little. It’ll help you succeed.

Speaking of succeeding…have you decided yet what you’ll do with the rest of your life? Still no!? Ugh. Fine. So in the meantime, go and ask or answer questions about Job Training and Career Qualifications!
