Three Cheers for 4Jays!

February 8th, 2010 by Crystal

Once upon a very long time ago, I was a cheerleader. And of course, everyone knows it’s the job of a cheerleader to pump up the crowd and get them standing on their feet. So pull out your pom poms and get ready to cheer for this week’s Featured Contributor: Give me a J. Give me a J. Give me a J. Give me a J. No. I haven’t gone wacky for the letter J. I’m just giddy because this Contributor Corner rock star is 4Jays (Get it?). Does Mathdoc have a prescription for Wikidiction?

January 25th, 2010 by Crystal

Is there a cure for wikiholicism? For that strong wikidiction that keeps you up at night and leaves you longing for more? C’mon. You know what I’m talking about… The urge to recategorize, revert and edit when you should be working, eating, sleeping or spending time with your significant other. So is there a remedy? My guess is probably not because even our resident M.D.s have found the insatiable appetite for sharing knowledge incurable. Our Featured Contributor of the week knows all too well what I’m talking about. He’s MathdocAnswers.com contributorship at its finest. But like the rest of us, he is verifiably addicted. Don’t believe me? Read on to discover the name of his daughter’s dog… (and other interesting tidbits and noteworthy accomplishments!)

What is your Answers.com user name and the history behind it?

My Answers.com user name is Mathdoc. I am a pediatrician and also a college math teacher. Put them together and you have me, MATHDOC.

What other badges do you hold on Answers.com?

I have my gold badge, my runner-up AnswerThon badge and my 10,000 contributions badge. I hope to get 1,000 trust points! I am also a mentor.

What is your first name?

My first name is Charles, but I go by Chuck. Charles was what my parents called me when I was in trouble, so I avoid it.

What is your age?

I am 51.

Would you like to tell us about your family?

I have two wonderful kids, a 24-year-old (Justin), who lives in San Diego, and a 21-year-old (Melanie), who lives at home. My 21-year-old named her dog, YES! YOU GUESSED IT, WIKI! (Wiki is Weimaraner). Melanie is working on her English credential. I have a wonderful wife named Judy who loves to bake. I am working on getting her to answer more baking questions.

Do you have any pets?

I have a dog named Echo. We call her that because she is kind of hyper and bounces off the walls. My wife has a dog name Hunter and, of course, now you know about Wiki, my daughter’s dog. Echo and Hunter are Springer Spaniels.

Where do you live, how long have you lived there and why do you like the area?

I live in Southern California, Northridge to be specific. Many people know it for the large Northridge Earthquake. (January 17, 1994 at 4:31 AM)

Where did you grow up and do you have any special memories of your childhood?

I grew up in Southern California (born in Los Angeles). I have always loved math and science. One of my favorite things I did growing up was rock collecting.

What are your key areas of knowledge, interests or expertise?

I love math, science, medicine and trivia. Love to watch Jeopardy.

A long time ago, I collected Beanie Babies. I still have them since they are worth just about nothing now. I collected pennies to and have all the US pennies. I also collect rocks.

What do you like to do for recreation?

I have a 220-gallon salt water reef tank filled with corals and fish. It takes tons of work almost every day, but I love it and it looks amazing!

What are a few random facts about yourself?

I am pretty much tone deaf. When I sing you better RUN, but I love music and I do try. I love the movie The Wizard of Oz. It is my all-time favorite. I also love country and oldies music.

Do you have any special talents you’d like to share?

Keeping my salt water reef tank with many rare corals from all over the world.

What accomplishments are you proud of?

I am proud of my masters in math and proud to be able to help people learn and understand it. Also, as a doctor, I saw some problems with the HMO system, and I actually wrote legislation which was passed and signed into law by the Governor of California. I am a member of a union for doctors. Here is a quote from them:

“Charles D. Goodman, M.D., a pediatrician from Los Angeles County, was elected as the UAPD Secretary. During the past few years, Dr. Goodman helped to write and pass state legislation protecting the interests of HMO patients and doctors. He is an effective advocate for the rights of doctors. ”

I am no longer Secretary, but still an active Union member!

I would love to help more people love and understand math.

How would you describe yourself or personality?

I was looking up something and found the answer on Answers.com. I knew right away it was a great place and a “class act.”

What keeps you coming back to Answers.com?

I love the questions. They are always fun and interesting. Also, I love getting feedback. The other Supers especially Matthew (Brave3) have always been good to me. In fact, I have ENORMOUS respect for all the Supervisors here. They are a dedicated, great group and, I always enjoy talking to them, each and every one!

What is your favorite Answers.com activity?

Answering questions. I love the math questions, but sometimes I just love to look at the main page and answer some of the random unanswered questions.

You can best believe that he’s: MountainMan391

January 18th, 2010 by Crystal

Mountain, mountain man! I wanna’ be a mountain man! Okay, so the lyrics might be a little bit off – but this week’s Featured Contributor is certainly not. He’s MountainMan391 (a/k/a Keith) – a Category Supervisor, Bronze Contributor and one of Answers.com’s rockin’ knowledge ninjas (or is that pirate?)! When he is not busy spending time in the wild outdoors, field herping or winning prestigious contests for model rockets, you can find him watching over Norse Mythology or just fixing some of the grammar and spelling blunders that sometimes pop up on Recent Site Activity. Here’s more on our very own MountainMan391:

What is your Answers.com user name and the history behind it?

My user name on Answers.com is MountainMan391; it derives from a nickname that I received from my friends. You see, I have a beard and I spend a lot of time out in the woods, so they think that I look and act a lot like a 19th Century mountain man. The name just kind of stuck.

Do you have any pets?

Yes, I currently have two dogs, two cats, a red rat snake and a green anole lizard

Where do you live, how long have you lived there and why do you like the area?

I live in the small rural town of Pequea, Pennsylvania and have for about four years. Some of my friends make jokes about me living in the “boondocks“, but, as a huge outdoorsman, I am absolutely in love with the area. I get to wake-up to the sight of the beautiful Susquehanna River right outside of my window; sometimes even to the sight of a bald eagle swooping down and catching a fish from the water. I live within a 20 minute hike to a magnificent limestone cliff named House Rock, a cavern called Wind Cave and a trail system that reaches all the way to Baltimore, MD. What’s more, I’m within an hour, by car, of the Chesapeake Bay. There are only two other places where I would want to live: the Colorado Rocky Mountains and the Alaskan wilderness.

Where did you grow up and do you have any special memories of your childhood?

I grew up in a semi-urban town right outside of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania named Lemoyne. However, I do not have many special memories of the place.

What is your key area of knowledge, interest or expertise?

My greatest passion in life is the great outdoors, and I became interested in it when I first moved here to Pequea. Before this town, I’ve always lived in an urban environment. I think the reason why I love being out in the woods so much is just the freedom and sense of calm and peace that I get from it.

I also love studying Norse culture and mythology, mainly for religious reasons; I follow a religion called Ásatrú (or Nordisk Siðr), the revival of the beliefs and practices of ancient, pre-Christian Scandinavia.

Do you have any collections or hobbies?

I don’t have any collections, but I do have plenty of hobbies: hiking, camping, hunting, fishing, canoeing, spelunking, animal watching, field herping, model rocketry and making pyrotechnics, to name a few.

What are a few random facts about yourself?

I am obsessive compulsive when it comes to proper grammar and spelling, so called “text-talk” really bothers me; and my predominantly dark-brown beard has a random patch of red in it, LOL.

What accomplishments are you proud of?

Well, I was a national finalist in the Team America Rocketry Challenge, the largest model rocket contest in the world, for three years in a row. The final year, my team came in 15th place out of 700 teams.

What are your special goals or dreams?

I don’t have too many, but I am working on obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree in environmental biology, and I would love to someday own a cabin in Alaska.

How would you describe yourself or personality?

I consider myself a pretty open-minded and approachable guy; I love to learn new things. However, I do have my limits, and I will stand loyal to my values, my gods, my family and my friends.

What brought you to Answers.com?

I was looking for an online community of sorts, where I could learn new things and contribute what I know.

I am married and have a daughter in college. My wife is a nurse and my daughter is a film studies major.

We had a dog, but she is gone now, and we are thinking about getting another.

I have lived in the Silicon Valley/South Bay area for more than 30 years. I like this area very much, except that it seems awfully crowded now.

Where did you grow up and do you have any special memories of your childhood?

I grew up in and around Seattle, Washington. Sometimes I miss it, but then I remember the months upon months of gray, damp weather.

What educational information would you like to share?

I have attended college in my teens, 20s, 30s, 40s and 50s. I have an Associate’s degree in Electronics Engineering, a Bachelor’s degree in Management, a Master’s in Business Administration and a teaching credential in Mathematics.

What are some of your past and/or present occupations?

Electronics technician, electronics manufacturing engineer, new products program manager, web tools program manager, tutor, teacher.

What are your key area(s) of knowledge, interests or expertise?

It seems like I have done quite a lot of different things. I have lots of different interests. Usually I focus intensely on one thing for awhile and then move on to a new interest.

Do you have any collections or hobbies?

Photography is my biggest hobby. One unusual thing that I do as a hobby is photograph grave markers and publish them on a genealogy site. Sometimes I also transcribe archived records for another genealogy site.

What do you like to do for recreation?

I bicycle and hike in the hills.

What are a few random facts about yourself?

I’m about 90% bald. I could lose 20 pounds. I was only a few days too young for the Vietnam-era draft. I was a paperboy in the late 60s, and I used to read the whole paper, every day.

Do you have any special talents you’d like to share?

I enjoy digital photography and wish that I could use it on WikiAnswers. I guess I could link answers that need a drawing or photo to my Flickr web site. Definitely not singing, or dancing. I can’t play a musical instrument. I do work on the sound and light team at church.

What accomplishments are you proud of?

I helped start operations at two Silicon Valley companies, both of which had successful initial public offerings and both employed lots of people. This gives me a great feeling of satisfaction that I contributed something of value.

What are your special goals or dreams?

Most of my special goals and dreams are far beyond the realms of reasonable probability. I would like to see a lot more of the world.

How would you describe yourself or personality?

Sometimes I am Eeyore (from Winnie the Pooh); sometimes I am Wally (from Dilbert); sometimes I am Yoda (from Star Wars).

What brought you to Answers.com?

I like a chance to help people out.

What keeps you coming back to Answers.com?

I enjoy a challenging question and the chance to answer it in a way that suits me. I like fair and balanced answers to complex questions.

What is your favorite Answers.com activity?

Surfing for a really good question that is thought-provoking and causes me to do a few minutes of research to check my own accuracy; that’s the best.

Violaman0910 is Music to Our Wiki Ears

December 28th, 2009 by Crystal

WikiAnswers contributors tend to be enigmatic creatures – intelligent, passionate and driven on the surface, complex, multifaceted and extremely adroit behind the wiki exterior. The typical contributor is well-versed on one or more topics, has extreme writing skills and a handful of hobbies that are both mainstream and atypical. This week’s Featured Contributor is no exception. In fact, he can go from playing the viola in a soft, yet masterful manner to shooting up some bad guys in an intense online role-playing battle. Introducing Violaman0910…music to our wiki ears:

What is your WikiAnswers user name and the history behind it?

My user name Violaman0910 has been around since I was about 12. It was my first e-mail address, and it’s always kind of stuck with me. The user name Violaman refers to the fact that I’m a musician who plays the stringed instrument the viola. My birthday is September 10th, which is the reason for the 0910.

What is your first name?

David

What is your age?

I am 26 years old.

Would you care to tell us a bit about your family?

I live with my wife Lara. My mom dedicated her life to educating myself, my younger sister, Katie, and brother, Jonathan. My father and I have been very close my entire life. He’s been a great role model and hero of mine.

Do you have any pets?

When I married Lara I adopted her cat, Anestasia, a Siberian. (She’s a bundle of mischief!)

Where do you live, how long have you lived there and why do you like the area?

I live in Joliet, Illinois. We have been living in the area since we got married in January of 2009. The area is great because it’s close to both sets of parents, and we both love the city of Chicago, which is only a half-hour drive away. Chicago, as everyone knows, is a great town for food, entertainment, music and much more.

Where did you grow up and do you have any special memories of your childhood?

I grew up in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, a western suburb of Chicago. I have many fond memories of playing catch with my father, having cookouts and spending time with our big extended family (also in the area) on holidays and birthdays.

What educational information would you like to share?

I was homeschooled for the entirety of my 1-12 grades. I spent some time at Glenbard East High School in the Choir and chamber singers ensembles and orchestra. I went on to Wheaton College in Illinois, where I am currently only 6 credits shy of a Bachelors of Music Performance on Viola. I am currently withdrawn due to financial issues.

What are some of your past and/or present occupations?

I am currently a Security Officer, which pays the bills. I have been a private violin and viola teacher for the past 10 years, but currently have no students. My freshman year at Wheaton I was a paid intern as a Worship and Arts Assistant Director at Christ Community Church where I organized music for worship services, conducted the rehearsals of the praise team and led Sunday worship.

What is your key area of knowledge, interests or expertise?

I know a thing or two about science and astronomy, as well as philosophy and theology (and very random trivia). My education is in music, but I also love writing. I also have an intense curiosity of the world around me which leads me to love researching whatever piques my interest at the time.

Do you have any collections or hobbies?

My hobby would have to be video games. I have an unhealthy obsession with them. There’s something very satisfying about being able to virtually blow up your best friend with a bazooka and then have lunch with him afterward.

What do you like to do for recreation?

I love bike riding and swimming. My wife and I both love to curl up on the couch to a good movie or to sit at the table and play a good board game. That’s usually how we spend our evenings.

What are a few random facts about yourself?

I was held back from kindergarten because I was born in September. I play about 7 instruments, most of them have strings. I’ve been able to read music since I was 7. I have a red birthmark below my lower lip that people always ask me about. I’m right handed. I’m always doing something.

Do you have any special talents you’d like to share?

On top of being a musician, I also like to act and am in an Improv troupe.

What accomplishments are you proud of?

I’m proud of being a Wheaton College student, and of being in the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra back in high school. (In the CYSO we were given the opportunity to perform at Chicago’s Orchestra Hall, which was a real honor.)

What are your special goals or dreams?

My dream has always been to serve God through music. I am shooting for a position in music ministry at a few churches right now. My long-term goals are to raise a family and enjoy life.

How would you describe yourself or personality?

I would describe myself as passionate and opinionated about a great many things, but also kind, generous and understanding of others.

What brought you to WikiAnswers?

I discovered WikiAnswers through some online Google research I was doing, and asked a few questions. I believe I got blocked once for asking too many questions in the same vain, which forced me to create an account (which then educated me of my mistake). I have since learned a lot about how WikiAnswers works.

What keeps you coming back to WikiAnswers?

I love researching questions that pique my interest - which is what has kept me answering questions on WikiAnswers. If I don’t know the answer to a particularly intriguing question, I look it up and share my new-found knowledge. (I have learned to cite my sources, though!)

What is your favorite WikiAnswers activity?

As a Supervisor, I love catching vandals and cleaning up after them. I tend to float from topic to topic looking for abuses of the site and correcting them, answering the question with accurate information and deleting any foul language or bullying, then warning or blocking the vandal (where appropriate). I also enjoy splitting questions that don’t match up and merging questions that do - though I have found that merging tends to be more tedious work.
