Like a Quiet Storm Shadowfox Emerges

November 30th, 2009 by Crystal

Fox eyesThere is a fascinating paradigm on WikiAnswers that I often think about when I am busy recruiting new Supervisors to the ranks. It is the incredible number of Contributors who are doing many good things (literally on a mass scale) – quietly below the radar. They are the quiet storms that help make WikiAnswers an incredible knowledge resource. Like invisible troops, they wiki day in and day out in virtual silence – asking nothing in return. Our Featured Contributor of the Week happens to be an important part of this paradigm – this secret society of sorts – a magnificent Supervisor who has and continues to do great things…like a quiet storm. Introducing Shadowfox

How did you originally hear about WikiAnswers?

I discovered Answers.com first, a few years ago and used it regularly to search for information I needed. Over time, I noticed a link to WikiAnswers. I wasn’t quite sure how the site operated, so I took a look around. I was impressed with the neat organisation of the site and was intrigued with the sorts of questions asked. After browsing around for a little while, I found my calling - the Pokemon category! Finding a place where I could detail the knowledge I had built up on Pokemon over the years had me hooked. I signed up right away.

Explain your user name.

My user name can be interpreted a few ways and this has caused some confusion with a few people. It’s great I can clear this up! When I signed up on WikiAnswers, I had no idea as what to put down as a user name. I mulled over it for awhile and eventually concluded that I should put down something which expressed my personality. I immediately found two words which described me quite well - shadow and fox. ‘Shadow’ as I am a very quiet girl but also quite mysterious. I don’t give much about myself away. I also am more of a night person (although one can argue that shadows don’t exist at night; poetic license is a wonderful thing). I chose ‘fox’ as my other personality-describing word, as I have been interested in the animal symbol of the fox for awhile now. Doing some research, I have come to realise that the fox stands for walking in between two worlds and patience, among the more usual images that come to mind of a cunning or sly natured person. I have these traits so the name suits me well.
Shadowfox, I also found, was a type of Zoid. At the time I made my user name I didn’t know this. There’s no double meaning to my user name, I just created it by looking at my personality.

What motivates you to volunteer your time to the WikiAnswers community?

I think it’s that the more questions I answer, the better my writing becomes and the more I remember about Pokemon. Some answers do require some flicking through notes on my part, but after an hour of answering, I start to remember things better which not only helps me but WikiAnswers, too. I also use it as a sort of practice for exams. It’s really strange to say that Pokemon helped improved my writing skills! Over time, I developed my method of answering questions (most notably addressing all possibilities in a question) which helped me when I had to write essays for my subjects. Being a person who wants to start a career in writing, this is important to me.

There is a sense of accomplishment or at least contentment when I look at all the answers I have given. It is nice to know that I have helped someone and that I have shared my knowledge. This, combined with the fact that my writing is improved through contributions, keeps me coming back to WikiAnswers again and again.

What are your areas of expertise?

My area of expertise is anything Pokemon. Particularly, I have an extensive knowledge of the Pokemon RPGs for handheld consoles - for example Pokemon Diamond or Pokemon Crystal. I know quite a bit about the Pokemon anime as well, not to mention the mechanics of the other games although I haven’t played them fully. Most of my expertise lies in the later generation games (although if you were to ask me about Red version, I could still answer with complete confidance). I supervise the Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon and Pokemon Ranger FAQs. However, I can answer on every Pokemon category except for Pokemon XD and Colosseum and Battle Revolution.

What is your favorite WikiAnswers feature?

Sometimes you can’t give all the information necessary for a question or there is a way of explaining something which can’t be included due to site restrictions. For this reason my favourite WikiAnswers feature is the related questions and related links functions. There is a much better flow in navigation when relevant questions are linked to each other. There is also a greater way of providing resources in a neat and clean way instead of pasting a URL in or as an answer. These options are immensly useful.

What has been the funniest question you’ve seen or your funniest experience on WikiAnswers?

The Harmless Nonsense category (which does not exist anymore) offered so many hilarious answers to incomplete questions. The funniest answer was to a question along the lines of “Why did the chicken cross the road?” The user who answered it included a very long list of absolutely funny possibilities from religious motives to answers with puns.

My funniest experience on WikiAnswers would be my first encounter with alternate wordings for questions. There was a Pokemon question which had a lot of alternate wordings which were actually different questions. I spent a lot of time splitting these questions and then merging them only to find hours later that there was a split AND merge option.

Share a random fact (or two) about yourself.

I enjoy playing the piano although, since I have not been taught and have no grasp of musical notation, I find that I play by ear and have learnt many pieces by listening to someone play and mimicking their sound. I have also read a lot into ancient mythology (particularly Greek and Roman beliefs) including gods and mythical creatures. It is interesting to see all the intertwined stories and how they have influenced modern times - from characters in novels to brand names.

RosaMistica: From Indonesia with Love

July 7th, 2009 by Crystal

RosaWhat loves anime, is as busy as a beaver and can simultaneously sing a song in Makassarnese while recategorizing hundreds of misplaced Loch Ness Monster questions? It’s not a what! It’s a WHO! (And not the kind you’ll find on the pages of a Dr. Seuss classic.) This who happens to be one of WikiAnswers’ amazing teen Supervisors and dedicated WIT Team Leader, Vandal Patrol Generalist, WikiGuide, WikiReviewer and sleek Silver Contributor. To whom do we refer? The one and only wondrous phenomenon known as RosaMistica!

Dive in to find out more about this Indonesian powerhouse:

Where do you live?

I live in Indonesia in a town called Sungguminasa, which is in the Province of South Sulawesi. It’s a pretty quiet place to live. I have lived here for 11 years of my life. When I was at Elementary School, I moved to Australia to accompany my dad who got a scholarship to take his master’s there. I lived in Adelaide for three years and moved back to Indonesia in 2001. For high school I attended a boarding school, so I spent the last three years of my life there, occasionally coming back home. Now that I’ve graduated and going to college in August, I live back at my house in the small town of Sungguminasa.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up here in Indonesia, but like I explained, I spent three years of my life in Adelaide. I realized that living in Australia turned me from a shy girl to a talkative girl. I like that change. Special memories, well, attending a boarding school was a very special memory. My friends there were more like family. I remember my last night sleeping at the dorm. We couldn’t sleep because we were too busy crying and hugging each other! Even the boys cried, which is a rare sight. I would never forget my three years at high school.

What is your current occupation?

I currently tutor English and also ‘teach’ the Indonesian language on this blog I made: http://learnindo.tumblr.com/ Come by and visit sometime!

What is your key area of knowledge or expertise?

It’s not only me, but others do think I’m great at teaching. And I think this is a great advantage for me since I want to be a lecturer like my dad. Other than that, I’m a pretty good writer. I have finished my first novel (the title is Hutan Kegelapan - Dark Forest). When I have let friends and family read it, they always say it is worth being published! I have enjoyed writing since I was eight years old. In fact, you won’t find me without a pen and paper nearby!

Do you have any special interests or hobbies?

My hobby is photography and interests (which people find kind of weird for a teenager) are ufology, cryptozoology and Egyptology (my favorite ologies). I know it’s weird, but there you go. That’s me!

What do you like to do for recreation?

Watching anime! I’m a very big anime fan. Some of my favorites are Kyo Kara Maoh, Hunter X Hunter and Fullmetal Alchemist. I also write loads for recreation, read fantasy books and manga. Oh, I nearly forgot! Contributing at WikiAnswers is something I do for recreation too! :D

What has your schooling been like?

The education in Indonesia is very different I guess. I spent two years at kindergarten, six years at Sekolah Dasar (Elementary School), three years at Sekolah Menengah Pertama (Junior Primary) and three years at Sekolah Menengah Atas (High School). I’ve graduated, and now waiting for the first term at college to start. The major I’m taking is English at Universitas Hasanuddin.

Please share some random facts about yourself, special thoughts, etc.

I can speak a native language from my area, Makassarnese. For example, “Kungai sikali WikiAnswers ka baji-bajiki taunna, nampa tampa’ paling baji tongi akbage-bage pangissengang!” means “I really like WikiAnswers because the people are nice and it’s also a great place to share your knowledge!”

Do you own any collections?

I collect fossils and rocks. I have been collecting since I found my very first fossil (the jaw of a bat) in a cave at Maros. My rock collection started when my uncle gave me some after he saw my fossil collection. I also have a very big collection of books which includes fantasy, horror, romance, science and history.

Do you have any special talents?

I guess writing is my special talent.

What are some accomplishments you are proud of?

Graduating from high school with very good marks! I was so afraid I would fail my national exams, but I passed!

Do you have any special goals or dreams?

I have a few. I would like to work in the United Nations. It is a very big dream, but I’m going to try to reach it. My second biggest dream is to have a WikiAnswers site in Indonesian language! Just like the Tagalog site.

What brought you to WikiAnswers.com?

WikiAnswers popped up on Google’s search engine when I was looking for information on my favorite anime, Kyo Kara Maoh! I opened it and found that the question hadn’t been answered yet. I knew the answer so I took about one minute… and a few minutes more to open other questions… I got hooked in less than an hour! The next day I sent Brave3 an email to apply to be a Supervisor.

What keeps you coming back to WikiAnswers.com?

My categories, the Supers, my WIT team members and also a saying that I read from a book. It said, “Knowledge is nothing without sharing it with others.” I agree with that. WikiAnswers is a major part of my life now.

What is your favorite WikiAnswers.com activity?

Recategorizing, answering (especially the English to Indonesian questions) and deleting nonsense answers.

How would you describe yourself or personality?

I’m a very cheerful, outgoing person. I love to make friends! I can’t stand to be “not busy” and to be “too quiet.” My friends call me “Ms. Overly-energetic.” Yep, that’s me!

A true wiki hero: Shinobi Swordsman

November 17th, 2008 by Liz

A Naruto headband...

One of the things I always say is: Don’t mess with ninjas. Another thing I like to say is: Don’t mess with ridiculously awesome WikiAnswers Supervisors who double as Mentors, Vandal Patrolmen, WikiGuides, and WIT members. Which is why I’d like to introduce Shinobi Swordsman, who is one of each of these and much more.

But Shinobi Swordsman can boast other talents when offline as well: He’s a fan of Naruto, his favorite anime. In his words: “Ninjas rule!” I guess that explains the Naruto headband above. A high school student, he’s taking Spanish 2 and seems to dabble in Hebrew. Believing knowledge is power, he says his hopes and dreams include becoming a true renaissance man. Well, so far so good.

Here’s a little more about Shinobi in his own words:

How did you originally hear about WikiAnswers?

I originally heard about WikiAnswers from my ten-year old cousin.

Explain your username.

My username is based on seven characters from an anime called Naruto.

What motivates you to volunteer your time to the WikiAnswers community?

I am motivated to spend my time on WikiAnswers because I enjoy answering questions, sharing knowledge, and just in general enjoying the “wiki” part of WikiAnswers.

What are your areas of expertise?

My areas of expertise include greeting new contributors, and answering chess-related questions.

What is your favorite WikiAnswers feature?

My favorite WikiAnswers feature is the Batch Recat.

What is the funniest question/funniest experience on WikiAnswers?

The funniest experience would have to be reading all the “Fun Questions” threads on the community Forum. It’s like reading the comics in the newspaper every morning.

Share a random fact (or two) about yourself.

I enjoy dancing but I don’t like to dance in front of others.
