All I’m going to say is…well actually, I have nothing to say. I think the Black Eyed Peas said it best…
Pinoy ka - sigaw na - sige
Kung maganda ka - sigaw na - sige
Kung buhay mo’y mahalaga - sige
Salamat sa ‘yong suporta
What does that mean in English?
You’re Filipino, shout it out c’mmon!
If you’re beautiful, shout it out , c’mmon!
If your life is valuable , c’mmon!
Thank you for your support!
Seriously, folks. Thanks for coming out and getting involved in WikiAnswers. It’s awesome seeing such Filipino love going on. I was so proud, I showed my mom how the Tagalog category was growing and then we had a whole conversation reminiscing about Sarangola ni Pepe from my childhood.
So today, it is with a great sense of pride that we announce that Tagalog is the first non-English language on WikiAnswers to reach such a huge number of questions and answers to warrant its VERY OWN top level categorization! What does that MEAN in regular terms? Well it means that just like Business and Finance is its own category and Food and Cooking is ITS own category…now Tanong sa Tagalog is its own category too. And within the Tanong sa Tagalog category, you can find separate categories for things like Literature and Language or Health…but all the questions (and most of the answers) are in Tagalog!
So, thanks for your support, Filipinos! Here’s a little Black Eyed Peas love for you…
As you know, WikiAnswers is based on the wiki concept (anyone from anywhere can add to or edit answers) and answers are grown collaboratively over time by the community. This is the cool new world of user-generated content – where you are the writer, editor and publisher!
But we’re all human – at least most of us – and we do make mistakes.Come on, you know what I’m talking about. When was the last time you spelled definitely as definately or used their instead of they’re?It happens.
There are also those lurking among us who enjoy nothing better than having a good time at the expense of others. On WikiAnswers, that often comes in the form of posting useless, offensive or inflammatory answers or remarks.
So what happens when you come across a question whose answer leaves little to be desired?
You can edit it directly or Flag for Improvement! This handy new link located on the left in the menu area allows you to mark a Q&A as one that could use some TLC. This is especially useful when you are in a hurry or simply don’t have the knowledge required to improve an answer.
When you click on the link, you are presented with the following pop-up:
You can choose one or more of the options listed and even place a detailed comment as to why you are marking an answer as needing improvement. These flagged Q&As (little outlaws!) can be accessed here or you can Browse by Category and see only those Q&As in a particular topic area.
See something you want to clean up?Simply click on the Q&A, select Improve Answer and make your improvements. When you are done editing, remove the flags and comments related to the changes you made by clicking off the little checked boxes or selecting Edit Flags.
So the next time you come across something questionable or in need of some help, don’t turn a blind eye - remember to Flag for Improvement.
Let’s talk about camels. Why, you undoubtedly ask?
First of all, yes, Camels is a category on WikiAnswers and yes, you should definitely check it out, because if you are a zoo keeper, desert wanderer or biologist, it will just plain knock your socks off, and if you are not one of those, then it will crack you up, like so:
Second of all, camels totally creep me out. They always look high and they always seem to be laughing at you. “Ya, mon - you wanna ride wit me?”
Third of all, I needed an excuse to post this photo I have entitled, “The Scream II: Girl and Camel.” I won’t give away which one of them is the Answers Corp employee… yet.
Part of this What’s New on WikiAnswers page is the list of the latest category additions. I love skimming this list every so often because it reveals the wonderful, wacky and wild topics that WikiAnswers community members are interested in.
Currently, the homepage boasts “2,841 community-grown Q&A collections.” That number is constantly climbing, though, as evidenced by the latest additions list mentioned above.
For instance: Rats of NIMH. First of all, I loved the movie as a kid. Brilliant story. Second of all, it’s actually a category on WikiAnswers! Whether the people asking are kids, students, bookworms or nostalgic old timers like me, there is a population out there demanding answers, and here is a Q&A community giving just that.
Other new categories include Fashion Design, Yahoo Mail, Paganism, and Microsoft Word. That might be a random list, but hey, who is going to argue with curious people looking for answers?
…oh where, oh where does it go? If you’ve been singing the blues over WikiAnswers categorization, you’re not alone. We all have those moments when we ponder over where to place a question. Should it go in Grilling, Recipes… both? Would it be better to place it in Miscellaneous, and just let someone else tackle it? What if there is no perfect category?
Don’t fret. Here are some pointers on getting that question into the right category (or categories) the first time around:
Familiarize yourself with the current category tree. Do not assume that a category does not exist as the tree is constantly growing. At first, this might be a little overwhelming, but as time passes you will become more familiar with the tree and recognize immediately what might be a good fit for a misplaced question.
Explore possible question placements from different angles. For example, if you have a question about the human body that doesn’t seem to fit into Health, take a look at Science. It might be perfectly suited for Human Anatomy.
Leave a message for the category Supervisor or post a message on the Super Forum. Note: Always link the question of concern to better assist in this process.
Often using AnswerTips™ can point you in the right direction. Just double-click on any keyword in the question and see what comes up.
If the question truly has no home and there are many others with similar qualities, request that a new category be added to the tree.
In most cases, Miscellaneous should be used as a last resort. For those questions that are harmless yet will most likely never have a topic that they fit into – opt for Harmless Nonsense - Who stole the cookies from the cookie jar?. Unanswerable Questions to Edit, is reserved for questions that cannot be answered in their current condition and when there is not enough information included for someone else to fix - Why did this happen in WW2?.
Once you’ve found a logical ‘home’ for a question:
Place it in the most specific topic as possible. For example, a question about Zebras should be placed in Zebras, not Animal Life, Mammals, Land Mammals, etc.
If a question fits logically into two separate unrelated topics feel free to add both. “What is the estimated Zebra population in Ethiopia?” should be placed in Zebras and Ethiopia.
(A big thanks to our wonderful Senior Super Ksmail (Ken) for collaborating with me on this important post… You da’ man, KS!)
