the crew

November 4th, 2007 by Liz

Get to know the crew, starring…

Liz (aka eliesheva)

LizA woman of many roles, you might find Liz nitpicking questions as a WikiAnswers Supervisor, scouring the internet for Sesame Street clips or scribbling unidentifiable images on other peoples’ dry erase boards.

She loves long walks into the sunset, donuts and a good, silly question every Wednesday or so.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Crystal (aka Crystal)
CrystalWhen she is not busy meddling about in the WikiAnswers community (when is that again?), Crystal enjoys hanging out via chat and e-mail with WikiAnswers fantabulous crew of Supervisors. What a wicked kewl group to roll thick with…
Living a tad off the beaten path (deep woods), she loves a fine cup of coffee, exploring the depths of the human psyche and translating jumbled words into smooth, simple prose.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Matthew (aka Brave3)

Matthew recalls when he first met WikiAnswers: it was love at first site… As he started visiting the budding community on a regular basis, the contagious “WikiAnswers OCD” began to kick in and before he knew it he was up all night, strung out on splitting and merging.

At least he can now proudly proclaim that he’s been a full-blown Wikiholic for quite some time, and since there are not enough steps in any recovery program to stop him from WikiAnswering, well, he’s pretty much here to stay. In his spare time he moonlights as an Atlanta Braves fan and a wannabe venture capitalist.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Nirel (aka Nirel)
Hmmm...One day Nirel heard that you can chew a piece of Trident gum along with its wrapper, a campaign the company was pursuing to eliminate the litter produced by gum chewers. As a biologist, avid gum chewer and inquisitive individual she had to check this out. So she asked her friends and coworkers, but nobody knew.
She thought to herself, If only there was some type of portal where she could access thousands of individuals with the answers to her questions…
That was the day she discovered the power of WikiAnswers.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Shaya (aka Pickleshy)

Where ya goin', Shaya?You haven’t met wild and wacky hair until you’ve met Shaya… And even then, you have no idea what is yet to come from this creative genius.

Handmade jewelry? Sure. Homemade baked yumminess? No problem. Helpful WikiAnswers features? She can make it happen.

And of course, if things ever start to wind down, she can always tousle her hair again…

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sarah (aka Sarahi)
Red is kinda my color.Hear that laughing coming out from behind a blog post? That’s Sarah, who will probably eat your face if you’re too cute. A lot of the photos you see here are from Sarah’s perspective, and her camera lens. Yeah, she’s that good.
Sarah has three other addictions besides photography: spinning classes, feeding the rest of her QA team, and working on the best site EVER.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Denise (aka dnsed323)

Denise is the coolest!The one and only remaining Cuban who can’t Salsa. This Miami native now resides in New York City (under the watchful eye of Answers.com) and can be found mowing down men, women and children just for a seat on the subway. On occasion Denise is caught telling the same story twice (or three, or four) times, and has the ability to recite any line from any romantic comedy – no matter how cheesy.

Her interests include graphic design (she can Photoshop your socks off – seriously, like they were never there), wedding planning, and the oh-so-savory Starbuck’s Latte.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ari (aka Arib)The world is his oyster.
Now here’s a webmaster that puts all other webmasters to shame. In fact, his name is synonymous with webmastering. Look it up somewhere.
When Ari isn’t webmastering Denise’s socks off, he’s turning reality into art so he can keep the masses procrastinating… Other times he’s traveling across the world in his webmaster cape, trying to find the missing link…
And when he’s not doing any of those, he’s quoting the very best of hilarity.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Shara (aka Olaholah)

Shara is considering your... face.A Tar Heel born and bred, Shara is a multi-faceted woman with many talents but no southern drawl. She is an expert in the art of the Running Man and being emo… although not simultaneously.

She loves a good laugh, a good story, a good plate of nachos and a good nap on the floor.

    Defamatory remarks were made on your website concerning Griffin Guess. The remarks accuse Mr. Guess of dishonesty and malicious acts that are not support by facts.

    i am sure the post about Mr. Guess is violative our own terms and conditions. Please remove the post immediately. We are going to pursue a lawsuit against the article entitled: Who is Griffin Guess.

    My 11 year old daughter Googled a science ? She looked at your Site WIKI put in her ? The ? was about the types of factors of nonliving environments. Her reply was sexually rude. How can you have someone answer a ? like that? What are you doing to protect children from these rude answers? I was with her and quickly told her not to read the answer. What are you going to do to fix this issue?

  11. comment number 11 by: Matthew

    Hi Nancy,

    Thank you for bringing this to our attention! It looks like that answer is no longer on the site. If it is please post the full question so that we can remove it.

    Because WikiAnswers is based on the wiki platform anybody can share their knowledge. However, that means vandals sometimes post problem answers as well. We have a dedicated group of over 400 supervisors who patrol the site removing harmful content but unfortunately we can’t catch everything. We are also developing a number of automated means to catch this vandalism before it even gets on the site.

    Thank you for helping maintain the integrity of the service!

    If there is no such thing as a stupid question or answer, how come when I asked about nintendo ds covers my answer was… actually, yes…April Fool’s —jurk. Why the obnoxious comment, and who oversees these replies?

  13. comment number 13 by: JoyceP

    Hi Heybug, I apologize for the offensive answer that someone left to your question. As Matthew stated above, we work diligently to stop vandals, but there are times when they slip past us. I will check that Q&A, and will remove the offensive answer if another supervisor hasn’t beat me to it. And, hopefully, someone has already left a legitimate answer for you by now, but if not, please keep checking; we have many contributors who are excellent in Nintendo, as well as other games categories. 15. comment number 15 by: julianna short

    I recently recieved a letter from a Tony Smith with a Canadian stamp with a Canadian telephone number on the letter. This letter also had a check written out to me stating that I won because of some sort of internet sweepstakes but could not identify which one I had won from. My winnings were a total $57,000. U.S. dollars. The check was for $3,900.45 to pay for my taxes on the larger amount. The check was drawn out of Wells Fargo in San Francisco, CA and looked like a true check not some bogus looking paper. Your company name and address were on the the check and the letter enclosed. So I called him and he said to confidentially deposit the check then call him the next day. I did not do this but I did in fact take it to my bank (wamu) and gave them everything. Whether you are aware of this or not, someone is using your company as some sort of fraud to get money out of people. He said he would try and get the rest of the money to me by the end of the week, but may take awhile because there were 28 other winners to get money too. hope this helps your company out and find out who is doing this with your name attached to it. julianna

    I realize that this is not a typical blog that your crew is used to but I found no other prompt to click on to notify you of this. Sorry that I did not answer the “Antoine” question above. Julianna

  19. comment number 19 by: Liz

    Hi Iain!

    Go to http://wiki.answers.com. Ask your question in the search box at the top of the page. WikiAnswers might already have it, or you can enter it as a new question.

    If you register and log in (you only need a username, password and email address) you can actually get emailed when your question is answered or updated…

    Be in touch if you want to know more…

    I’ve been letting my son use this website and he was directed to a link (Terrible Link) called buttpics.com after asking a simple geography question - thought someone would like to know. Also, he will never return to wiki.answers.com.

  21. comment number 21 by: Liz

    Hi Zabrina -

    I’m so sorry that your child had to find that. I would love to remove the link (it’s very easy to do and any signed in user can do it) - do you still have the URL of that Q&A?

    Unfortunately, vandalism sometimes happens on WikiAnswers. Since it’s a user-generated Q&A site, where anyone can add questions or edit answers, we do stand to get silly questions and answers, vandalism and pure junk. The aim is that an expert should come along and enter the best possible answer s/he can give, improving the Q&A and helping future users.

    In case you are interested, it might help to know that WikiAnswers has a team of 400+ volunteer Supervisors who make it their business to roam through the site and clean up vandalism and spam (amongst other things). This also includes a dedicated Vandal Patrol who works around the clock to stop and block vandals.

    There is actually a flagging system for users who are logged in (registering is quick and only requires a username, password and email address). The list of flagged Q&As is constantly checked and the answers fixed. In addition, we are currently working on a Flagging system for non-logged in users.

    Hope this helps…

    Inside a warm damp cave completely sealed off from the outside world could life flourish indefinitely?

    Answer: No life forms could flourish indefinitely. In an isolated system, entropy always increases. Life tries to push entropy in the opposite direction. When life is created, entropy decreases in the cave but nature demands a greater entropy increase offset. The cave, being sealed, would mean that entropy would reach its max, thus energy necessary to sustain and generate new life would be unavailable. Maybe we should learn a lesson from this. Available energy is mandatory. Wealth may equate to available energy. If you want to live in a nation that is prospering make sure that its available energy supply is abundant.

    Entropy is one of “Physics Foibles”
